When it comes to kid’s rooms, we like mixing modern, linear furniture and lively details. It suits our design aesthetic while making it fun for our kids. In this case, we played around with a woodland theme in every aspect of decorating the room. The result is perfect for kids who share a room because it bridges gender and age gaps. And, as we talk to our kids about taking care of our planet, it seems appropriate to create a room that may foster a love of nature.
The Bed
Play around with the colors of the forest and mix in fun patterns like lumberjack plaids and modern prints that incorporate flora and fauna to create a casual, yet well thought out look. Or, stick to simple polka dot, stripe or diamond patterns in the natural tones of the forest.
Layer the bed with a cozy brightly colored blanket that looks just like one you’d take camping. The scalloped edge on this fleece blanket really finishes the look when draped on a bed.
The finishing touch is a set of nature-inspired pillows and animals such as a huggable giant sequoia tree pillow or a sweet crocheted fox in bright orange.
The Floor
Floor tile carpets and rugs are perfect for a kid’s room (or any room where messes and spills can happen!) because you can replace individual tiles as needed. The leaves, twigs and birds in this folky pattern bring a lot of vibrant color into the room.
The Walls
Use a large nature-themed decal to make an instant impact on one of your walls. Or, for something more permanent, put up wallpaper dotted with trees. Then, fill in blank spaces with large-scale prints. We’ve found a lovely eco-friendly set of prints in which whimsical squirrels scamper about in search of acorns.
Furnishings & Toys
Complete your room with toys and small furniture that fit the theme. We’ve found a fully functional and unique mushroom stool that looks like it’s been plucked out of Alice in Wonderland.
Finish with a selection of distinctive toys made of natural woods and fibers or recycled materials. A cardboard house for the kids to play in is adorned with a minimalist pattern of branches and critters on the exterior. This isn’t your refrigerator box variety playhouse!
These tree puzzles, constructed with a walnut trunk and ash foliage are a perfect addition as a decorative item your kids can play with.
