A Chill Is In the Air, Time to Warm Up

{ Family Spaces } Mon, 12 October, 2009

We love taking cues from the season, and fall is a great time to change things up a bit around the house.  Out go bright summer accent colors, and in come rich, warm palettes on throws, pillows and candles sprinkled throughout your abode.

When the nights get dark earlier and cooler weather arrives, nothing brings more cheer than lighting candles and fireplaces while cuddling up to a loved one under a fuzzy blanket.  Keep it simple with small touches that go a long way toward making things downright cozy.

Bring the outdoors in by burning a woodsy candle.  Soy wax candles are economical because they burn for hours and the scent fills a space quickly.

Hold off on turning up the thermostat by keeping warm cotton fleece blankets handy in the places where your family spends the most leisure time.

We love Java Log eco–friendly fire logs.  They’re made from recycled coffee, so they’re easy on the environment, burn bright, and have a clean sweet aroma.

Chilly evenings are a great time to host a “Fun-Do” gathering with family and friends.  Encourage inventive combinations, and give kids freedom to “play” with their food.

More about Fondue

  1. Some local grocers carry time-saving pre-made mixes (shhhh…no one needs to know)
  2. Get creative by adding a splash of white wine, fresh ground nutmeg or a dash of truffle oil to taste
  3. Experiment with dipping different types of bread, crudités, cornichons, apples, potatoes, beef or sausage in cheese fondue to make it a meal
  4. Chocolate fondue is great with fruit, angel food cake, marshmallows, etc. for dessert
