This holiday season, create a unique and festive centerpiece for a table or gathering place. We were inspired by colorful birds landing in the calm of a magical winter forest, and came up with a step-by-step guide for an arrangement that is both whimsical and refined. Follow our idea, or go for it, and try something a little out of the ordinary this year.
Step 1: Choose a fabric with lots of texture as the foundation for your design. Whether it’s a swath of richly embroidered fabric or a tablerunner, you’ll want to start with something that really pulls all of your colors together.
Step 2: Your showstopper is a manzanita branch dotted with colorful birds, which you can buy already made or make yourself (spray paint a branch with silver or white and attach artificial birds in various colors using a fine gauge floral wire). The open branches create height without blocking views.
Step 3: Anchor the branch with clusters of handpainted bird hurricanes and small votives to add a dash of sparkle and reinforce the theme. And, some small decorative pine trees in various heights work well to carry out the winter forest effect.
Step 4: Cluster bunches of berries, juniper, pine and pinecones around the hurricanes and trees to fill everything in.
Step 5: Add artifical snow so it looks like snowdrifts piled toward the center and spreading outwards for a finishing touch of winter.
