New Year, New… Closet?

{ Organizing } Thu, 14 January, 2010

What are you waiting for? Spring cleaning? A modern mom doesn’t wait to get organized.  Now is the time for renewal (and close-out sales) so start the year off right by organizing and refreshing your linens (sheets, blankets, towels, etc.).  It's easy to accumulate a collection of worn and mismatched linens over time, so begin by sorting by category and color to see what you have. Donate old linens and towels you don’t want to a school or homeless shelter, or repurpose them as rags and dust cloths.

Take inventory and replace whatever you tossed.  If you have the space in a linen closet, label a shelf for each room in your home. Not all of us have this luxury, so a cabinet, armoire or open shelving unit in the bathroom, bedroom or hallway is a nice solution. If your towels are going to be visible, they’ll look best if you stack the darkest colors on the bottom and work up to the lightest color. Same goes for size, largest to smallest.

Folding your sheets and towels the right way makes a huge difference because it will save space and avoids wrinkling, but it does take practice.  Our co-founders learned how to fold a fitted sheet from working at Martha Stewart Living, but you can learn from the many how-to guides on the Internet.  Trust us, it’s worth the time. We also recommend bundling your bed sheets together so you can easily grab a set when you’re ready to make a bed.

Once you’re organized, here are some of our favorite touches for keeping linens fresh.

Scented Liners

These liners add a fresh beautiful scent to any closet and whatever you store inside.

Linen Spray

This linen spray is another great option for keeping sheets smelling clean.  We love Caldrea products because they are made from scented oils so the fresh scent is lasting.  Spritz some on the bed before you have houseguests.

Cedar

Cedar blocks help deter moths and other pests when tucked into drawers or placed on shelves where linens are stored.

Dehumidifier

A dehumidifier will keep you linens dry, and free of allergens, mildew and odors.

Vinyl Bags

Bulky items such as winter blankets and down comforters can take up a lot of space, so using vinyl bags for storage will make them more compact and easy to manage, plus they prevent dust mites.

Labeling

Who isn't obsessed with the P-Touch labeler as an organizing tool?  It has so many uses.

Momologie Tips

  2. We’re fans of April Welch, a professional organizer who specializes in helping families with children.  Her Parent Blog offers ideas that are relevant to our daily lives.
