Our New Fitness Friends

{ Personal Style } Mon, 01 March, 2010

As we headed into a fresh fitness routine for the New Year, we told you about our favorite workout attire.  Now, let’s fuel your progress with a few gadgets and equipment that will work wonders. We’ve taken into consideration that for most of us, getting to the gym is tough when other priorities come up on a daily basis. Finding a way to work out regularly at home will give you a better chance at getting a frequent dose of fitness and a sense of accomplishment every time.  In fact, we prefer the at-home approach to going to a crowded, sweaty gym. To further the stick-to-it approach, some of these gadgets can even be packed in a suitcase when you travel.

Kettlebells

Gia Russo, co-founder of Momologie, has a lot of fun with kettlebells.  They’re cast iron weights that look like a cannonball with a handle.  You’ll be amazed at the number of exercises you can do with kettlebells to keep it interesting. Our favorite is the two-arm kettlebell swing.

Resistance Bands

Resistance bands are by far the most effective portable tools for strength training. By having bands with various resistance strengths, you address all muscle groups for a fantastic total body workout.

Workout Ball

Have fun with your workout routine and then use it to play with the kids!  An extra strong 55 or 65 cm workout ball (depending on your height) will fit your workout needs and last through playtime. It provides a supportive, cushiony but slightly unstable platform that supercharges your core muscles, improving balance, coordination and integrated strength.  This model comes with a convenient workout chart to guide you in strengthening and toning your thighs, hips, hands, arms, shoulders and upper back.

Wii Fit Dumbells

We’ve said it before.  We think the Wii Fit is the perfect choice for moms because, like an exercise ball, it serves double duty entertaining the kids.  Play a little every day and chart your progress. These dumbbells are a nice addition to help you get strong shapely arms.

Pilates Toner

Momologie Co-founder Michele Adams swears by her Multitoner to help her perfect her pilates exercises even while she’s watching TV. You can get a full body toning routine done in about 10 minutes.

Know What You Eat

Increasing muscle and toning are great, but to have more energy and burn more calories throughout the day — to really change your body composition — good nutrition is a must. Lance Armstrong’s Livestrong website is a great place to find inspiration and tools for living a healthy life.  The My Plate food journal and calorie counter helps you keep track of your diet and identify areas where you might need to make some changes.
