Take Me Away to a Secret Place

{ Family Vacations and Destinations } Fri, 30 October, 2009

Every parent feels like they need to find a secret hideaway to get away from it all, but it’s not always possible to do so without the kids in tow.  That’s why we love discovering vacation locations that are truly kid-friendly getaways where everyone gets what they want.  We’ve kept our picks for warm sunny vacations at under $150 per night.  You’ll feel rejuvenated in no time!

Mexico

Dolphin Cove Inn, Manzanillo (from $110 per night)
The Bay of Manzanillo is located on the west coast of Mexico, south of Puerto Vallarta and north of Zihuatanejo.  It’s removed from the country’s mega-resort towns, making it a more soothing, affordable location.  Dolphin Cove Inn has a huge children’s pool and the concierge are well-versed on the nearby nature activities including a turtle sanctuary, volcano climb, kayaking in a lagoon, snorkeling and deep sea fishing.

Costa Rica

La Posada Private Jungle Bungalows (from $125 per bungalow)
This small property consists of four bungalows constructed with native materials, designed to blend into the surrounding environment and create an authentic, yet comfortable stay in one of Costa Rica's most exciting locales.  A trek to the nearby rainforest beaches of Manuel Antonio National Park is an exceptional opportunity to spy native wildlife.  And, activities in the jungle include swimming in waterfalls, horseback riding, river rafting, canopy tours, sea kayaking and mangrove tours.

St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands

Maho Bay Camps (from $135 per night)
Citizens of the US don’t need a passport to travel to the USVI, which is great if the kids don’t have one and you want to plan a quick trip. The tent-cottages of Maho-Bay are built on platforms and connected by elevated walkways to preserve the environment.  The majority of St. John is National Park land and this fits right in as one of the most highly praised eco-tourism destinations in the world.  Activities include yoga, hiking, boat trips to the other islands, evening star walks and art workshops including ceramics, papermaking, batik, glass blowing and painting.  This a great place for the eco-family.
