We’ve Come a Long Way, Mama!

{ Fashion } Fri, 29 January, 2010

Maternity fashion has evolved even since our kids were born five years ago.  Long gone are frumpy mumus and polyester stretch pants.  Now, maternity wear is hip AND accommodating when your body is ever-changing. Buy a couple of good staples and build your wardrobe around them. Look to purchase well-made, comfortable jeans, leggings, slacks, a dress, a few tops, and comfy shoes, then accessorize like a hot mama.

Some ways to save money on the clothes you’ll wear for a short six to eight months? Think about coordinating a clothing exchange with friends who may have recently been pregnant. It’s a way to get a second life for cute stuff that’s been worn only a short while. Then, shop at low-end retailers for larger sizes that might accommodate your growing belly. Try to buy items that can be worn after pregnancy because you will likely need them for a little while after delivery. And, when you’re done, help another future mom out by donating to a woman’s shelter or holding another clothing exchange.

Dresses

Simple yet feminine, this jersey knit dress will get a ton of wear throughout your pregnancy. Ruching at the chest and around the waist look great as your belly grows and there’s plenty of room for your backside so it doesn't get tighter on your bum. In a rich navy color, it’ll look great worn with silver, gold or black accessories.

The pretty silhouette of this dress is designed to flatter your body in a classic wrap style, and supersoft viscose keeps you comfy while smoothing your shape.  One lucky Momologie subscriber has won a $100.00 shopping spree from The Gap today!

Tunics/Tops

The drape front of this tunic really hides you belly and looks great with leggings or skinny jeans and tall boots.  You’ll be one sexy mama!

The bow on this shirt is done just right to make a playfulness statement with lots of style.

We love this ¾ length sleeve smocked blouse designed by Nicole Ritchie.  It’ll look perfect with black pants for the office or jeans on the weekend, paired with a long necklace and chunky bracelet.

This ¾ length sleeve henley is comfy and provides great coverage.  You’ll get tons of wear out of it, paired with leggings and flats.

Sweaters

As you know from a recent newsletter we dedicated to cardis, we absolutely love them, and think they’re a perfect piece to keep you warm when you’re pregnant. This lightweight, two-button sweater can be thrown over everything.

This classic cardigan in 100% pima cotton with two layers of ribbed trim at V-neckline and front placket will become your pregnancy staple. It’s a great item you’ll be able to wear after pregnancy.

Leggings

These cashmere mix leggings are amazing.  They are so comfortable you’ll want to wear them every day and will probably wear them when you’re not pregnant.

Jeans

Our favorite J Brand Jeans have entered the world of maternity. The soft elastic panels on each side of the underbelly waistband ant the higher rise in back will keep you comfy and modest throughout your pregnancy and are great for when you’re getting back in shape after baby arrives.

Pants

We love the flattering flare-leg pant for casual style, and a broken-in wash that's wonderfully soft, plus a discreet back panel will keep you comfy as you grow.

Coat

If you need a coat that accommodates your belly, this Liz Lange for Target wool coat is perfectly priced and will keep you looking downright hot through winter.
