As far as kids are concerned, before the age of four, a birthday party is about cake and presents. Parents, on the other hand, see an occasion for a memorable party. One way to keep everyone happy is to come up with a theme that fits the season.
Our idea for a fall woodland party blends retro elements with the rustic feel of a log cabin, to create the feeling of a fun picnic, camping trip or hike. The following elements are meant to give you a head start, and our birthday party check list will keep you organized before, during and after the big day.
Setting the Scene: We always start by selecting a color palette to pull everything together, such as the light blue, aqua, brown and white you'll see here. Next, we find items that are kitschy, retro and rustic to set the scene. Think wood, moss, gingham, and woodland creatures.

Branching-Out Centerpiece: Attach small paper flowers (making them with the kids) with fine gauge wire to a Manzanita branch from the craft store, or ask the kids to help you find branches in the yard or park (choose branches that look open and interesting). Place directly on the table or in a vase.

Dressing the Table: Set a table with items that create a woodsy feeling such as bamboo plates (eco & kid-friendly), wood print paper, wooden napkin rings, gingham patterned napkins, layered cotton fabric in complementary patterns and strewn acorns and leaves. Cut wood rounds can be used as serving boards for small sandwiches, snacks and appetizers.

Party Favors: Miniature stuffed woodland animals holding bags of candy or Beatrix Potter books tied with ribbon and patterned gift tag. Place favors on a wood tray or in natural gift bags with tissue paper.

Light it Up: Paper lanterns add a festive look outdoors or bring the outdoors feeling inside. Embellish plain white lanterns with polka dots and paper streamers (another project for the kids), and attach to the ceiling with painter's tape or Fun-Tak.
