There is so much to do during the holiday season, and it seems crazy to add a party on top of it all. But, it sure is fun to entertain, so that’s why we created this handy checklist to help you keep it together and enjoy the good times with loved ones.
Three Weeks Ahead
- Compile guest list
- Start inviting your guests by phone or e-mail; For a formal gathering, send a traditional invitation
- Plan the menu
Two Weeks Ahead
- Consider how you will accommodate your guests, and place an order for any rentals you might need (tables & chairs for extra seating)
- Organize serving pieces, seating, table linens, etc. to see what’s missing and purchase or borrow what you need
- Ask family to bring side dishes or desserts
- Plan your centerpiece and table décor
- Order a fresh turkey, ham, roast beef or special desserts
- Create a timeline for preparing food ahead of time and the day of the party
One-Week Ahead
- Start shopping for decorating items
- Compile grocery list for what you can prepare early and start buying non-perishables
Four Days Before
- Start defrosting a frozen turkey in refrigerator
- Prepare and lay out serving pieces, plates, glasses, etc.
- Purchase items needed for the centerpiece, or order one
Three Days Before
- Start baking and cooking whatever can be made ahead and frozen
- Prepare table linens (iron if needed)
- Purchase perishable groceries
- Purchase beverages and ice
Two Days Before
- Start preparing side dishes, as appropriate
- Clean up the house and prepare the guest bathroom
- Set up your party space
One-Day Ahead
- Set and decorate the table
- Prepare desserts and other side dishes
- Do the math and figure out how early you’ll need to put your turkey in the oven (there is a calculator on www.butterball.com)
Morning of Party
- Prep and cook last minute items on the menu and put your turkey in the oven
- Chill beverages
Before Guests Arrive
- If centerpiece is fresh, place it on the table
- Set out condiments
- Set out appetizers and beverages
As Guests Arrive
- Greet your guests
- Try not to worry about what didn’t get done, help has arrived so ask people to pitch in (give willing participants an assignment)
- Enjoy the party!
